Practical Experience

I think that this class has definitely taught me a lot about teaching that I will be able to use in the future. Over Winter break I work at an ice rink where i sometimes help people learn how to skate. I think that from this class it has taught me how to better understand how I can help people with skating as well as other physical activities. Also when i am home I help some of my friends when we are at the gym. I think that I as well as my friends will benefit from me taking this class. It has taught me how to give feedback. I need to be specific and congruent to what I had shown them and asked them to do. I think that this could allow them to better understand the task that we are doing. Overall I think that this class has prepared me well for the future and with the amount of teaching that we did I think that I am well prepared to move on in my journey to become a physical education teacher.

Explorer Scavenger Hunt Assignment

On Friday November 7th our TA's DJ and Freddie taught a lesson. They made up a scavenger hunt that incorporated the use of technology with cell phones. I liked the idea that we had to get the clues through our cells phones and had to send back pictures in order to receive a clue. However, I felt as though the activity did not keep us moving enough because there was a lot of time when we were just sitting there and waiting for another clue. I thought that the lesson was a good idea and it was fun. I think that if it was done differently the students would have gotten more of a physical workout from the activity. I had a really good time doing it and it kept the students entertained. Overall I liked the lesson and would do something similar in the future.

Orienteering Lesson Lab D

On Wednesday November 12th I taught another lesson on orienteering. For this class I chose to continue with teaching them about maps and how to use them. I set up an event for them around our physical education building with about 20 controls. I then let them decide what groups they wanted to be in. The could choose easy, medium and hard. This actually went a little better than I thought. I thought that it was going to take more time than it did. However the part that did not go as well was that it was a little confusing and the students were not paying attention as much as I would have wanted. It was a little hectic to get things started and completed within 15 minutes but I did the best that I could. My timecoding sheet was also better this lesson than the last. When we were out in the halls and they were finding controls they worked well. however it was hard to give feedback because everyone was in different places. They did what they were suppose to and they didn't run at all which was surprising. I thought that there would have been more discipline problems then there were. Overall I was very pleased with the lesson and how it turned out. It was well worth the work and hours that were put into it and I would definitely do this lesson again.

Orienteering Lesson (Lab C)

On Monday November 3rd I taught my first Orienteering lesson. For this I taught my students how to use a compass and how to navigate themselves around the gymnasium. I really enjoyed teaching this task but I found it hard to complete everything in the allotted 7 minutes that I had. Because we had to work with a partner we only got about 7 minutes each. When I taught my lesson I taught for about 10 minutes alone. It was a lot harder to get the task in in that short amount of time. Because I had such a short time to teach the lesson my timecoding form was far off what it should have been because there had to be so much instruction. The students took a little bit longer to understand how to use a compass than i expected which made my lesson go longer then it was suppose to. Going to each person it did make it easier to give feedback to the students. I thought that with my whole lesson I did the best that I could do in that situation. I would definitely teach orienteering to my students when i teach in the future.

Mini Conference

On Friday October 10th I attended the mini conference held by SUNY Cortland. I am in APEM which is the physical education club and I was in charge of the food for the conference. In the introduction session my EDU 255 class was the group that started an instant activity and got everyone moving around. For this we did mix, mix, mingle, mingle. I then attended a session on how to spice up your warm-ups. This was a fun session that pretty much gave you ideas on how to make fun warm-ups and instant activities for your students. I then attended a session on heart rate monitors. This session was interesting but not my favorite because it was more like a lecture. I like to be moving around and being active. Lastly I went to a cup stacking session. This was my favorite and the one that I wanted to go to the whole day. It is something that is fun and kids and adults of all ages can enjoy. During this session we were given a 5 day unit plan that I plan on using when I am teaching. I believe that this is something that many enjoy and can get them moving if you do different activities. Overall I enjoyed the conference very much!

Ultimate Frisbee Lesson

On September 22nd I taught my Ultimate Frisbee lesson. I thought that overall i did a good job. This lesson was interesting because this was that first lesson in which we were voice recorded. I this experience it was strange to listen to yourself teach. It however did help a lot to hear how you talk and what you should and should not say. This will definitely help me out when i am teaching future lessons. Also this allows me to hear the feedback that I gave to my students. I learned that I need to talk to them more and be clearer when speaking to them. Overall hearing myself teach my lesson was very helpful for my future lessons.

Football lesson

On the first day of class for my 255 education class we taught our peers a lesson. My partner and I chose to teach how to throw a football. After watching our lesson I believe that we did a good job teaching our fellow peers. Football was a topic picked by my partner, and my backround in it was very limited. I chose to let him do most of the demonstrations while I talked and helped throughout. I think that I could have done a better job if i talked more when my partner was demonstrating. I think that overall, as a whole we were efficient in getting our topic across to our peers but there are things that we need to work on to become more efficient teacher.
